Queenscliff coach Heath Jamieson has joked he would have got one of Australia’s most beloved movie characters to come out of retirement if the Coutas were still in finals contention after AFL Barwon chose not to overturn the result of Saturday’s loss to Barwon Heads.
Both clubs have acknowledged the decision by one goal umpire to overrule the other goal umpire, both timekeepers and the live scorer at half-time of the clash at Queenscliff Recreation Reserve cost Queenscliff a win.
However, a special meeting of the AFL Barwon Commission’s Football Netball Operations sub-committee yesterday (Tuesday) decided the Seagulls would retain the four points, keeping them inside the top five heading into the final round.
In a statement to K rock Football, Jamieson accepted the decision gracefully and injected some humour into the situation.
“Regretfully, we will be accepting AFL Barwon’s decision to award the team that scored less than us on the weekend the four points,” he said.
“We do this out of respect for Barwon Heads, who are an innocent party to this somewhat and their upcoming week’s match and potential finals series.
“Although we accept the decision, we don’t think it is the correct one, and we hope that in the future, the league puts measures in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We are not happy to be the guinea pigs.
“I will stress; if this had ramifications on Queenscliff’s finals qualification, we would have rang Dennis Denuto and have him dust off the suit.
“But right now, we are happy to hold our place in history as the only team ever to score more than the opposition and lose.”
