Werribee Centrals will thoroughly investigate an incident during Saturday’s loss to North Geelong, where a spectator allegedly struck Magpies captain Zac Schwennesen.
The Centurions released a statement this (Monday) morning, saying the spectator, who is believed to be the father of a current Centrals player, will be banned from future matches at Galvin Park.
“Werribee Centrals President Chris Kopelke and his committee are appalled by the behaviour of a spectator at their ground on Saturday as anyone who witnessed it,” the statement said.
“The President expressed his and the Club’s dismay at the events that took place and have acted immediately in banning the spectator from Galvin Park games.”
The statement rejected some media reports that the spectator entered the field of play to confront Schwennesen.
“The safety of all participants and spectators is the number one priority involved at the Werribee Centrals Football and Netball Club,” the statement continued.
“Violence and anti-social behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated, and (as) is the case in this instance, action will be taken against the perpetrator.
“The club will contact everyone involved (on) Saturday and offer any counselling and help needed in dealing with the situation.
“A full investigation will be conducted.”
Schwennesen suffered a black eye in the incident, but North Geelong says he is unlikely to press charges.
“Zac is a well-respected leader and a fair player that does not deserve what happened to him,” Magpies president Darren Vandenberg said on Saturday night.
North Geelong has banned the spectator from matches at Keith Barclay Oval while his son is a Werribee Centrals player.
The GDFNL will conduct its own investigation, while AFL Barwon is also understood to be reviewing the footage.
“We are aware of the seriousness of it,” President Neville Whitley said.
“We will go through an investigation process with the clubs.”
