Cats “numb” following prelim loss

Likening the Geelong rooms to a morgue following last night’s preliminary final defeat would be disrespectful to the dead.

However, there was a sense of loss not only for the ten-point defeat by the Brisbane Lions but also for the opportunity that went begging to challenge for the club’s 11th VFL/AFL premiership.

Leading by as much as 25 points early in the third quarter, the Cats conceded seven of the following eight goals of the contest to trail by 12 points twice during the final term.

Ollie Henry went close to single-handedly clinching a grand final berth for Geelong, kicking two goals in five minutes to snatch a one-point lead.

In the end, brilliant goals from second-half heroes Callum Ah Chee and Cam Rayner brought the Cats’ season to a premature conclusion.

“Numb’s a great term; just flat as you’d expect in losing in a prelim,” veteran defender Jed Bews told K rock Football.

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster ride at times; we thought we were in control.

“They fought back well. We got our nose back in front, and then they did.
