Veteran Centurion calls time

Werribee Centrals veteran Matt Miller has announced his retirement.

Miller, 38, was restricted to just three games in 2024 after suffering a severe facial injury in an incident with Bell Post Hill’s Boe Collins in the Round 4 clash at Myers Reserve.

A Werribee Districts junior who was good enough to play at VFL level with Williamstown, the courageous midfielder made his name in our region with St Joseph’s and Leopold.

Miller played 36 games for Joeys in 2005-06 and 153 games for the Lions between 2010-18.

He was part of the Lions’ maiden GFNL premiership and the Team of the Year in 2016, while winning the best-and-fairest in 2011.

Miller traded the green and gold of Leopold for Werribee Centrals ahead of the 2019 season.

At the Centurions, he played 59 games and was a member of the GDFNL Team of the Year in 2019.

“Respected by his teammates, coaches and club personnel, Matt was a leader with his courage and determination displayed on and off the field,” a statement from Werribee Centrals said.

“With his partner Tate and family, he is one of the most loved members of the Centurion family.

“Always at functions and there for the support of the players and the club.”

Meanwhile, North Geelong has unveiled the signing of two GFNL players to its members.

A Lara junior, Ben O’Brien arrives after 24 senior games at the Cats.

The Magpies have also attracted more talent down Melbourne Road, with Jordan Purcell arriving from North Shore with 60 senior games under his belt.
