The Lorne Theatre owner says he hopes the venue will continue operating for another century when it re-opens under a new operator.
A bemused Josh Rudd has quelled rumours spreading about the iconic cinemas future after the existing operator announced that advertised screenings will no longer proceed.
“Sorry for any inconvenience…thank you to all our loyal cinephiles for supporting our small business over many years,” venue operators posted to social media.
“It has given us great joy to present close to 3000 stories for your enjoyment and stimulation.
“Goodnight and goodluck,” the post concluded.
Mr Rudd says it’s taken time to find a new cinema operator willing to take over the venue, but he’s found one and their lease starts from November 1.
“Investing in cinema you need someone that knows what they are doing…they’re proven cinema operators,” he said.
He’s also confirmed the building will be renovated, but this is being done in conjunction with Heritage Victoria which has it listed for recognition and protection.
“This is one of the few buildings that has Victorian heritage recognition…the Grand Pacific for example has only got local recognition,” Mr Rudd said.
“So it’s massive for Lorne because there are not many buildings that are this special and I’m the custodian and I want to make sure it’s there for another 100 years.”
Two retail subtenants in the building have been given notice to vacate in the lease handover.
