Victoria’s bird flu outbreak is officially behind us.

Agriculture Victoria has confirmed the H7 flu has been eradicated from the state, after going through the country’s biggest avian flu outbreak in Australia last year.

Seven properties in the Meredith area had birds testing positive for the flu between May 22 and June 24, 2024, which saw birds destroyed.

It also played a role in the egg shortage.

Acting Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Cameron Bell said there was extensive surveillance, while more than 38,000 birds were tested.

‘The collaborative efforts of government, the chicken meat and egg industries, and the community have ensured that we could respond effectively to the outbreak,” Dr Bell said.

Bird owners are still being reminded to maintain biosecurity practices, including poultry sheds, yards and equipment clean.

Any unexplained bird deaths should also be reported to a vet or Agriculture Victoria on 136 186.
