Avalon Airport says it will introduce further measures, as it reopens following a gun scare on Thursday afternoon.

A 17-year-old had to be restrained by passengers and crew boarding a Jetstar flight to Sydney, after he appeared to be carrying a shotgun.

The boy was dressed as a maintenance worker and reportedly entered through the fence of the airport and tried to board the flight at 2.20pm.

Police were called and allegedly found two bags and a vehicle belonging to the boy when they arrived.

The boy from the Ballarat region was swiftly arrested, he was charged overnight and will stay in custody until he faces court at a later date.

Fortunately no one was physically injured during the incident.

Avalon Airport CEO Ari Suss said they’ve since reopened, and have committed to introducing greater safety measures to prevent similar incidents.

“(Avalon) has now fully reopened, with all flights and operations back to normal scheduling,” Ms Suss said.
