By-election set for Friday finale

The Werribee by-election is set to come down to postal votes.

After counting on Saturday night it was ruled the election was too close to call to replace former treasurer Tim Pallas.

Labor candidate John Lister held a lead over Liberal Steve Murphy after Saturday’s count.

However a block of postal votes will be counted on Friday and could potentially swing the election.

“It’s very, very tight. It’s going down to the wire,” premier Jacinta Allan said.

Deputy Liberal leader Sam Groth telling The Age the swing was already sending a message.

“We know there’s huge amounts of pre-poll numbers,” he said on Saturday night.

“The swing that we’ve seen though, the swing that we’ve seen away from the government tonight, if we replicate that in 21 months’ time, we will see a change in government in Victoria.”

The seat has long been a safe seat for the Labor party, having been held from 1979 to 1996 by Ken Coghill, and from 1996 to 2002 by Mary Gillett before it was retired.

The set returned to Labor when it was re-introduced in 2014, being held by Tim Pallas until his retirement last month.
