The CFA is urging people to check fire restrictions and conditions, particularly when going camping this summer.

It comes as the City of Greater Geelong and surrounding Surf Coast local government areas have entered fire danger periods.

The restrictions mean permits are required for fires across the region.

However Glenn Sharp from the Conservation Regulator said people were sometimes unsure on what they could and could not do.

“We had patrols out over the Labour Day long weekend earlier in the year, and even though it was a Total Fire Ban day we still found over 40 fires around the state still alight,” Sharp said.

“There’s people who think that just because it’s in a fire pit, for example, that we may provide them at a campsite that the fire’s safe and the fire’s not going to go anywhere.”

“We really want people to make sure they’re aware of what they can and can’t do when it comes to campfires, and look at it and research it before they go camping so that they know they can abide by the regulations relating to them.”
