Child dies, five injured in horror Stonehaven smash

A child has died and another is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a horror head-on smash at Stonehaven.

Police say two cars were travelling on the Hamilton Highway just after 9pm on Wednesday when the collision occurred.

Emergency crews found one deceased child in the wreckage of one car along with three other people, including a critically injured child and a man and woman with serious injuries.

One man in the second vehicle was taken to hospital in a critical condition while a second suffered serious injuries.

The Hamilton Highway was closed between Friend In Hand Road and Pollocksford Road following the collision.

Accident investigators remained on scene during the night before the road was re-opened to traffic just before 7am Thursday.
