Community mourn loss of “smart, funny, caring, loving, insightful boy.”

The Geelong community is rallying to cover the funeral costs of young man who died in a car accident at Moolap.

Friends of Mark Kufe’s mother Maylene say she would never ask for help, so they’ve set up a gofundme to give her some of the support she needs.

“The truth is, she does not have the money to pay for a funeral,” organiser of the fundraiser Clare Linane said.

“She will literally be taking out a loan to pay for Mark’s funeral.”

The 19-year-old was killed when the car he was driving left Point Henry Road on Tuesday evening and hit a pole, his seriously injured passenger was taken to hospital.

Friends of his bereaved mother say her life “has been devoted to her boys”, including driving them to football, basketball and dance.

Co-President of the Grovedale Football and Netball Club Simon Hose said Kufe played 121 games with the side and was known as a positive presence around the club.

“He will be sorely missed, just one of those kids that always had a smile on his face,” he said.

“A great team mate to all the young football players…and one of those Grovedale kids that was always around at training and especially home match days watching and supporting his football club.”

Mr Hose said he’s been inundated with calls from club members and the community since news of Mr Kufe’s death had been released.

“I just can’t believe it, tragic…I pass on my condolences to all the family…great hardworking family.”
