A long gap in mayoral terms is not without precedent in the council’s history.

Solomon Jacobs first served as mayor of the Town of Geelong between 1901 and 1902, before returning to serve as mayor of the now City of Geelong between 1928 and 1930.

Cr Jacons would also serve a third term between 1938 and 1939.

The Borough of Queenscliffe has also elected its leadership for the next year.

Di Rule will take on the position of mayor, while Brendan Monahan will be her deputy.
