The start of Geelong’s AFL campaign is in doubt due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred threatening to make landfall in Queensland this week.

The Cats kick off the season against reigning premiers Brisbane at the Gabba on Thursday night, but the cyclone could bring 130km/h winds coupled with up to 60mm of rain.

Reports suggest the AFL is keeping an eye on the forecast and is coming up with contingencies in case the match can’t go ahead.

The Queensland government will be keeping league officials up to date as we edge closer to the season opener, but Premier David Crisafulli said on Sunday it’s too early to make any decisions.

“Let’s see where that heads and we’ll give all sports all the information they need,” he said.

“They’ll make their own call, that’s the way it should be.

“We’ll provide the information to them in a timely manner, let’s just see how it goes at this stage.”

The Bureau of Meteorology upgraded Tropical Cyclone Alfred to a Category 2 storm overnight Sunday, as the cyclone moves south-east.
