Deakin has defied a downward slide by Australian universities in global rankings.

It’s climbed 12 places from 277 to 265 in the Times Higher Education rankings.

That’s in contrast to top Australia’s top-ranked institution, University of Melbourne, which dropped three places to 34.

The nations second-highest ranked university Monash fell out of the top 50, dropping from 44 to 54.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin said the elevation timed well with the schools pending half century anniversary.

“As we approach our 50th anniversary at the end of 2024, I am pleased that Deakin’s progress and leadership continue to be recognised on a global stage,” he said.

“Rankings never tell the whole story but are an essential guide, and our progress shows we are on the right track.

“We have made extraordinary progress in our comparatively short life and remain focused on driving a culture of innovation, creativity and excellence while staying true to our founding values of inclusion and access to education.”

Professor Martin said he was pleased that the university’s work was being recognised internationally.

“What we do matters to our students, our local communities, and Australia. And through our extensive community, industry and academic networks, what we do matters internationally.”
