The Department of Justice confirmed there was an incident but said it was quickly resolved.

The 130-bed centre opened in August after lengthy delays, but is still operating well below capacity.

In one notable assault in August, a youth justice worker was punched after telling a detainee not to wear slides in the kitchen.

Another inmate joined the attack, leaving the staff member with serious injuries.

In September the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) labelled Cherry Creek “a dangerous place to work”, saying that while there were only ten inmates at the time, several were facing murder charges.

“Who would want to come to work each day if they knew that the prospect of being assaulted is a very real one?” the CPSU’s Julie McKeown was quoted as saying.

The centre was designed to replace the troubled Parkville and Malmsbury centres, although the government has since reversed its decision to close Parkville.

It was originally planned for Wyndham’s tourist and market gardens precinct at Werribee South, however local outrage forced the then-Andrews government to find an alternative site.
