New technology has resulted in 26 infringements issued for dumping at a charity shop.
Geelong council says new tech using computer vision and AI has resulted in 20 thousand dollars of infringements since January at the Sharon Court salvation army store for illegal rubbish dumping.
“Illegal dumping of rubbish outside charity shops is an ongoing issue for the City and charities, costing thousands to clean up and dispose of, and draining resources that could be better spent on community programs and services,” mayor Trent Sullivan said.
“Dumped rubbish is a rising problem for many councils,” councillor Peter Murrihy added.
“People who dump rubbish in Greater Geelong are costing ratepayers more than $1 million per year.”
Council workers are continuing to monitor the issue, but the council says the use of the new technology reduces man hours and allows for offenders to face enforcement quicker.
Fines for littering start at $322 if issued on the spot and extend up to $9,900 when imposed by a court.
