A proposed Balmoral Quay development at Rippleside will not be going ahead.

Geelong councillors elected to block the proposal during a meeting on Tuesday night, voting unanimously against it.

The proposal would have seen the construction of 84 units over seven storeys, retail and office space.

However the building would have been at a similar level to nearby properties due to the site’s levels.

The city is now set to let Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny know of its decision.

The plan shows where all facilities will be on the McMillan Street site, but a more detailed concept plan will now be developed.

The Shire says the ageing buildings currently on the site are struggling to meet community needs.

The hub will also include affordable rental housing for local workers, including nurses and teachers.

The site will still be owned by the council.
