A shocking start to the holidays with 42 people caught drink driving or driving on drugs in a police operation in Geelong.
Operation Lockdown saw four booze buses in use, with one driver caught at point-136, almost three times the limit.
Senior Sergeant Travis Farnsworth from Geelong and Colac Highway Patrol said the outcomes were concerning.
“42 people were caught driving with drugs or too much alcohol in their system over the course of the operation – that’s two drivers detected every hour,” he said.
“The vast majority of drink drivers were found with blood alcohol levels between 0.05 and 0.09, which suggests that many either misjudged their alcohol intake or chose to gamble with their safety after a few drinks.”
Three probationary drivers were among those caught, while a Charlemont man has lost his license for 13 months and had his vehicle impounded after being caught at 0.136 – almost three times the legal limit.
Senior Sergeant Farnsworth said drinking and driving is incredibly dangerous.
“We know that impaired driving contributes to serious injury and fatal collisions, so we are doing everything we can to detect and remove these drivers from our roads.
“Police will continue to be out today and every day to keep the community safe on Victorian roads.
“Our message is clear – if you drink, do not drive.”
