After being out of action for several months, local athletes will be able to take to Landy Field again, with the completion of the $1.5m track renewal.

The South Geelong facility is set to reopen on Saturday after works were completed on the striking new-look track earlier in the week.

The upgrades were fully funded by the City of Greater Geelong and involved replacing the ageing track with a brand-new surface in blue and grey.

The hammer and discus cage has been relocated to allow for more competition events to be carried out at the same time in accordance with World Athletics standards.

The news comes following concern from Geelong Athletics officials last week that two athletes compromised the surface last week by using it before it had cured.

Fortunately the project was able to be delivered on time and on budget according to Geelong Council.

The upgrade saw 57 tonnes of recycled rubber sourced from used truck tyres installed underneath the track surface.

The next update at Landy Field will be the construction of a new $10m two-storey pavilion, jointly funded by the City and state government.
