The Victorian government will not say how much it will cost to break a contract with the operators of Port Phillip Prison.

Inmates from the Truganina facility will be transferred to Lara’s Western Plains Correctional Centre from the middle of next year.

The $1 billion, 1200 bed, high security facility, behind Barwon Prison, was completed in November 2022.

Shadow Corrections Minister Brad Battin welcomed the prison being opened.

However he questioned the cost of breaking the contract with Port Phillip Prison operators G4S, when it closes at the end of 2025.

“To come out and say that they don’t know or aren’t away of how much it’s going to get out of the contract, it just shows the absolute arrogance of the government that has no money,” he said.

“The reason they have no money is that they just don’t care.

“How can you say I’m going to end a contract without knowing the cost.”
