Geelong will play a key role in Victoria’s work to support those battling eating disorders.

A new day program will be established at Barwon Health, the first of its kind in regional Victoria, aimed at supporting people closer to home.

It is part of the Victorian Eating Disorders Strategy 2024-2031, and will provide programs and help across the state.

Eating disorders have risen over the last ten years, with the pandemic and social media contributing to new disorders and relapses.

Premier Jacinta Allan said the strategy would also focus on key areas including early intervention and treatment.

“It recognises that an eating disorder is a serious and complex mental health illness that needs a range of different treatments, depending on the individual and their circumstance,” Ms Allan said.

Ms Allan said having programs across the state allowed people to receive treatment closer to their homes and personal network of support.
