Geelong locals will join protests in Melbourne today on waste incinerators.
Groups from across Melbourne will be joined by a local brigade at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre’s waste expo today as part of the protest.
Five incinerators in Melbourne are planned along with the Lara project.
Organiser Chas Street said it was essential their voices were heard on the matter, saying there has been a lack of consultation on the issue.
“These incinerators are larger than the MCG and will burn millions of tonnes of household waste, including plastics and other toxic materials in the heart of Victoria’s fastest growing residential areas,” he said.
“The premier and the planning minister are ignoring decades of experience from Europe and North America by embracing this madness just as the rest of the world is moving away from it.
“There has very little community consultation and no proper environmental assessment. For projects of such a significant scale so close to homes, schools, health clinics and communities, this is staggering.”
