A Portarlington man who posed as a returned soldier has avoided jail time.
Darren McDonald faced the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, pleading guilty to improper use of defence service decoration.
The court was told he wore medals that belonged to a dead friend, although those medals have since been returned to the deceased man’s family.

McDonald, who spent 10 years in the Australian Defence Force, was also the president of the Portarlington RSL sub-branch but stood down.
The 56-year-old was convicted and fined $2500.
