A new campaign is being launched, targeting sexual harassment in Geelong’s nightclubs and other venues.
The ‘Safe Night Out’ program will focus on building awareness around unacceptable behaviour, while also encouraging people to speak out and provide support if someone is feeling unsafe.
The initiative is being supported by police, Deakin University researchers, local venue operators and the Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre.
Deakin research found more than 55 per cent of women and just over 30 per cent of men experienced sexual harassment while out in the city over the last three months.
Professor Peter Miller from Deakin said they looked at strategies around the world that worked best to improve safety in venues.
‘Our aim is to create a safe and fun nightlife environment in Geelong,’ Professor Miller said.
“This campaign will see police work with venues in the Geelong area to implement an agreed process that aims to disrupt inappropriate behaviour and deter people from acting inappropriately.’
As part of the program, accused people will be spoken to by venue staff and given the chance to improve their behaviour.
The face being kicked out of the venue and placed on a three month ban from clubs and pubs in Geelong.
More serious behaviour and second offences will be referred to police.
