Media outlets, supermarkets and banks were hit by the outage that hit Geelong and Australia just after 3pm Friday.

It has been revealed it was caused by a software update with a defect deployed by cyber security firm CrowdStrike, and not a malicious attack.

The federal government is still trying to work out the impact of the outage across the country.

Locals are also being warned of cyberhackers claiming to try to help them recover from the major incident.
