A 150-year-old Moreton Bay Fig in Portarlington is a contender for 2023 Victorian Tree of the Year.

The tree on on Batman Road has a 40-metre spread and is among nine significant trees which are being considered for the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) competition, with voting open until October 29 and the winner to be announced on October 31.

Other contenders include a strand of Lemon-Scented Gums in Toorak, Norfolk Island Pine’s in Port Fairy and one of Victoria’s largest River Red Gums in Guildford that’s estimated to be over 500-years-old.

“These trees provide their local communities with serenity and respite and represent the diverse and awe-inspiring beauty of Victoria’s natural environment,” Trust CEO Simon Ambrose said.

He says the contest serves as a celebration of the state’s natural heritage and as an awareness raiser of conservation efforts for them.
