Drivers heading from Melbourne to Geelong are being warned of a major change on the West Gate Freeway that have come into effect today.

Motorists wishing to travel to Geelong will need to use the two right-hand lanes at the Western Ring Road exit, rather than the left lanes, which has been the case during most of the West Gate tunnel works.

The left lanes will be used to access the Western Ring Road from today.

Andrew Crook from the Department of Transport said it was important locals were made aware of the switch.

“You do need to pick your lane early,” he said.

“You need to pay attention to those new signs, and please, if you miss your exit, stay in your lane and avoid last-minute lane changes.”

Geelong-bound rivers who find themselves in the wrong lanes are able to exit the Western Ring Road at Boundary Road, turn right and then rejoin the Ring Road in the Geelong-bound lanes.

Users on social media reacted with anger after learning of the latest changes, warning they would lead to more confusion.

“So they are changing the lanes over again … so more people (are) confused which lane they need,” one person wrote.

Another said they were surprised there had not already been a serious collision as a result of the constantly changing conditions. “I drove this way home today and people were criss-crossing all over the place and cutting each other off, they posted.

VicRoads has produced a driver’s point of view video in the hope of helping motorists understand the new requirements.
