Several crews work to contain Gnarwarre grass fire

Crews have been called to a large grass fire just outside Geelong, quickly bringing the blaze under control despite heat and strong winds on Sunday.

The blaze broke out in Gnarwarre around 6pm, with 25 CFA crews and two aircraft called in to contain the grass fire on Gnarwarre Rd.

The fire started from a mulch pile and spread with the wind, the fire burnt into a eaten-out paddock and the spread of the fire was slowed.

“As we reflect on this incident, it’s a great reminder of the importance of having a solid plan in place when it comes to fighting fires,” a Winchelsea Fire Brigade spokesperson said on Facebook.

“The DGO’s quick thinking and decision to call for more tankers undoubtedly made a significant difference in containing the blaze.

“It’s also a testament to the training and skills of our firefighters, who worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control.

“This incident serves as a valuable learning experience for all of us, highlighting the need for constant vigilance and preparedness when it comes to fire safety.

“By sharing our experiences and lessons learned, we can continue to improve our response times and strategies, ultimately keeping our communities safer.”
