A local council is holding a soft plastics collection trial, with the aim of having the material recycled into other products.

Surf Coast Shire residents are being encouraged to collect and store soft plastics packaging during July.

The materials can then be dropped off for free in designated bins over three days in August.

The bins will be in Torquay, Lorne, Anglesea and Winchelsea.

The council says the plastics, which can be easily scrunched in your hand, will be bailed and sent to makers in Melbourne to be turned into new packaging and recycled road products.

It says it wants to hold the trial to ensure recycling partners are not overwhelmed, and will be able to track the soft plastics using a RecycleSmart dashboard.
