Premier Jacinta Allan has defended state government appointed monitors staying at Geelong council until January.
They were appointed to help with the recruitment of the City’s CEO Ali Wastie, who took over the role in August.
In Geelong on Friday the premier said there was still work for the monitors at council.
“Given the recent history, a period of stability is needed as a new CEO beds into the role,” she said.
The relationship between council and former premier Daniel Andrews was at best turbulent in recent years, his most recent visits to the region rarely going without a swipe at the city and its administration.
Geelong council was without a permanent CEO for over a year and three mayors have led the city over a similar period.
Ms Allan says the monitors remain at council to “provide that additional support” and “to provide a report to government and ensure that we’ve got ongoing stable good governance of the Geelong council for the Geelong community.”
