There is a strong chance Avalon Airport could get a rail link to Melbourne’s CBD before Melbourne Airport does.

The Avalon line could be up and running within two years, with the government delaying the line to Tulla by four years in the state budget.

It is a move being welcomed by management at the local airport.

Treasurer and member for Werribee Tim Pallas said it might be time to start looking at other options as the stand off with Melbourne Airport operators continues.

“I’m getting increasingly concerned about whether or not as a state we shouldn’t be putting an each way bet around Avalon and starting to think about what they can do,” he said.

Melbourne Airport wants to have a train station underground, while the Victorian government is in favour of an overpass for the line with an above-ground station.

Avalon Airport chief Tony Brun said an Avalon link would increase choice and competition in the airport market.
