Police will investigate a suspicious fire at a popular Ryrie Street bar, after emergency services were called in the early hours of Friday morning.
Fire crews attended The Sporting Globe in Geelong’s CBD around 1.10am, after reports of a blaze towards the back of the premises.
Union Street was seen taped off Friday morning, while the front of the venue was closed and the footpath on Ryrie Street also blocked off.
Fortunately no one was inside at the time of the fire, the extend of damage is unclear at this stage.
A spokesperson for The Sporting Globe said the venue was unsure when it may be able to open again, and thanked emergency services.
“In the early hours of (Friday) morning, a fire occurred in a section of the beer garden while the venue was closed. We are relieved that no one was injured,” a post on Facebook read.
“We are working closely with emergency services to understand the cause of the fire and fully support their efforts to address the situation.
“We are committed to reopening as soon as possible and thank our team, emergency responders, and local community for their support. Further updates to follow.”
A police spokesperson said an arson chemist will attend the scene as the investigation remains ongoing.
