The Torquay Fire Brigade has responded to a garage fire, started by a lithium battery.
Firies were called to the scene on Island Drive just before 3am Wednesday after residents and neighbours were woken up by loud explosions.
The fire was started by a battery failure in an e-bike charger.
The fire was extinguished before firefighters arrived, crews made sure it was properly put out and worked to remove toxic smoke from the house.
The CFA is reminding people of the importance of safety when it comes to lithium battery, the local brigade urging people not to use aftermarket charges on equipment it is not designed for.
The Torquay team said the reminder was especially important as e-bikes and scooters are popular across the Surf Coast.
They’ve encouraged locals to check the tips on their website at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/…/charging-and-battery-safety
