Two people have died following two sepereate crashes on local roads late on Saturday night.
The first crash was a single vehicle accident on Mount Mercer Road in Meredith, which saw one person killed and another flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Crews were called to the collision around 11.15pm, after reports a car had crashed into a tree.
The driver, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene, while the vehicle’s only passenger was airlifted to hospital where they are fighting for life.
Meantime, another person has died following a two-vehicle crash just minutes later on the Geelong Ring Road in Lara.
Emergency services responded after reports a ute and car collided around 11.20pm.
The passenger of the ute died at the scene, while the driver was taken to hospital where they remain under police guard.
The driver of the car involved suffered minor injuries.
It’s understood the Geelong Ring Road is still closed between Anakie Rd and Bacchus Marsh Rd heading north, with police setting up a crime scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.

The two tragic deaths means 250 people have now died on Victoria’s road so far this year, compared to 259 at the same time in 2023.
