Geelong Trades Hall says it will do what it can to support local Ford workers who are likely to soon be without a job after the US-based manufacturerannounced a cut of 400 jobs.Most of those jobs are likely to be Geelong-based, Trades Hall Secretary Anthony Anderson said he’s aware of the cuts but is awaiting confirmation of where and when.
Mr. Anderson said the Union which represents Ford workers will seek a clearer picture of the company’s latest mass redundancies plan when they meet on Friday.
“Sometime (Friday) the respective unions that cover the membership out at Ford will be meeting with the Ford Motor Company,” he said.
“That’s on the cards so the unions are seeking a breakdown of the numbers across the Ford Motor Company sites that are still left.
Mr. Anderson said he’s also hoping the state government will also step up with assistance.
“The state government may seek to put in some form of transition type of arrangement.
“Similar to what we had with previous closures in 2016.”
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews spoke on the issue on Thursday, saying he understands the news will be hard for workers.
“This will be a tough time for those Ford workers and their families,” Mr. Andrews said.
“This is a decision out of the United States and it will be a very challenging time.
“We are already engaged in providing support to those workers.”
