$40 million in funding has been secured for Stage Two development at the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre.
The state and federal governments each committing $20 million to the project, with the City of Greater Geelong putting forward up to $300,000.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM said they’re thrilled to have backing from the Victorian and Australian governments.
“Once complete, Stage Two of NBAC will offer world-class facilities that will become a central hub in the community for years to come,” he said.
The upgrades will add two new indoor pools, a gym, two group fitness rooms, and a café.
Trent Sullivan, Leopold ward Councillor said the funding will help upgrade a much loved facility.
“As one of the first residents to swim at Stage One when it opened, I’ve seen first-hand the impact it’s made to the community.”
The site is currently home to a 50-metre outdoor pool, with a 25-metre pool and a warm water exercise pool set to be built in Stage Two.
Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said it’s welcome news for the community.
“The community has advocated for an indoor pool for many years, and stage two of this project will provide just that – an Aquatic Centre that our community can be proud of, with a vast range of facilities to fill the gap within the Bellarine Peninsula.”
The project is scheduled to finish in late 2027.
Corangamite MP Libby Coker said it’s a proud moment for the region.
“The project will ensure that our community, no matter their age or ability, has access to first-class swimming, fitness, rehabilitation and learn-to-swim services right on their doorstep,” she said.
