Local Vietnam and other veterans will be in Torquay this weekend for a commemoration service.
The Torquay RSL is holding the service from 11am on Sunday morning at the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Plaque.
Clive Badelow from the Torquay RSL said they expected all veterans from various conflicts to attend.
“Some 60,000 Australian men and women served in the Vietnam War and tragically, 523 Australians lost their lives in that way, and over 3,000 were wounded,” he said.
Australia’s involvement in the war finished over 50 years ago, but Colonel Badelow said August was still special for Vietnam veterans.
“As the years pass, the annual commemorations become even more special as we remember Australia’s role in Vietnam.
“We should never forget what Australians have done in so many conflicts over the years.
“In August particularly we remember Vietnam, which was Australia’s longest war until we became involved in the Afghanistan conflict.”
