Geelong’s political leaders have paid their respects to departing premier Daniel Andrews, as attention turns to the question of succession: who will take over as Victoria’s next leader?

Bendigo MP and current Deputy Premier Jacinta Allen is considered the hot favourite, although Labor’s notoriously fractious factional system means she is far from a safe bet.

Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll, who has in the past been touted as an aspiring premier, could throw his hat into the ring although he is more likely to emerge from today’s caucus meeting as deputy leader.

Daniel Andrews sent shock waves through Australian politics on Tuesday afternoon when he announced he was stepping down as premier, and would leave politics altogether from 5pm on Wednesday.

The news attracted a wave of less-then-gracious barbs from Mr Andrews’ traditional detractors and a flood of compliments from supporters, who pointed to his three successive election victories and his continuing popularity with Victorian voters.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Mr Andrews’ management of Victoria’s COVID-19 crisis would be his greatest legacy.

“He stood up for doing what he believed was absolutely right to keep Victorians safe,” said the PM.

Victorian opposition leader John Pesutto was less forgiving, slamming the outgoing premier for promising 800,000 new homes over 10 years while knowing that he would be leaving politics.

“In 12 months time, Daniel Andrews will not be here to deliver on that promise,” Mr Pesutto said.

“He made a promise to the Victorian people last week when he knew that he was going to resign today.

“That’s not a legacy anyone can be proud of.”

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said she was shocked by Mr Andrews’ announcement.

“I was pretty devastated,” she told Geelong Broadcasters.

“But I have to say I’ve been really privileged and proud to have served under the Andrews Labor government for the past nine years.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that Daniel Andrews is probably the best premier we’ve had in this state.”

Mayor Trent Sullivan conceded it had been an impressive tenure.

“We thank him for his service,” Cr Sullivan said, adding that political leadership was “no easy task”.

“From Geelong’s perspective, we’re looking forward to working with the new premier and cabinet, and we’re looking to great things for our region.

“Political relationships are always ongoing, you always have to put effort into them, but we’re always looking to move forward and this is another fantastic opportunity.”
