There’s a push for a new school in Winchelsea to help cater the growing number of children in the community.

It comes with a meeting to be held next week with the hopes of putting pressure on council and the education department to look at the project.

Winchelsea primary School Council President and mum-of-two Megan Morris says they’re almost at capacity.

“In the next couple of years, we’re going to hit it or potentially exceed it,” she says.

“And we are concerned that the school’s facilities are too old and potentially too small to deal with the growing number of kids coming into the area.”

She says the idea of a new school is well supported locally as the area continues to grow.

“We’re going to have a population in time that will be able to support being able to go from prep to year 12, and not needing to bus kids into Geelong for their secondary education.”

Member for Polworth Richard Riordan has thrown his support behind the meeting.

“To make sure Winchelsea has the educational opportunities for young people it needs, now is the time for everyone in Winchelsea to engage in this issue, and I strongly urge as many people as possible to attend.”

A petition has been started while parents will meet at the L-T-C on Thursday next week.
