Stage one works have begun on a new aquatic centre in Torquay.
The Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre has had its sods turned, with works on a lap pool and gym in stage on of works.
Preparation works will continue until February.
Surf Coast Shire Mayor Mike Bodsworth said it was exciting to get the project under way.
“Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre will bring generational health, wellbeing and water safety benefits, as well as lots of fun times, for people of all ages and abilities in our community and we are thrilled to have construction underway,” he said.
“We thank community members who have maintained and advocated for this vision across a long period, and our Australian and Victorian Government funding partners for helping enable the vision to become a reality.
“And we thank Wadawurrung Traditional Owners for their support and cultural guidance.”
The first stage will include more than $43 million of works.
