A former teacher who now heads up a local community and education centre will lead the City of Wyndham for the next 12 months, after being elected as the city’s newest mayor.
Jennie Barrera has taken the reins after predecessor Cr Susan McIntyre’s term came to an end at Wednesday night’s council meeting.
Cr Barrera, who was elected to the council in 2020, has been CEO of the Wyndham Community and Education Centre since 2007.
She also chairs the Wyndham Humanitarian Network and holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Masters of Language and Literacy, an Advanced Diploma in Community Business Management a PhD in History.
A mother of four, Cr Barrera has lived in Werribee for more than three decades and has a background in education and community services.
2019/20 mayor Josh Gilligan will serve as her deputy.
Earlier this week the Surf Coast Shire re-elected mayor Liz Pattison for another term.
Geelong is not due to choose its next mayor until 2024.
