OCEAN Grove coach Pete Davey has floated the prospect of the club’s Ray Menzies Oval base being home to a night football competition following the cancellation of the senior 2020 season in the Geelong region.
The Grubbers have hosted night matches for the last three years, and Davey is keen for his young list to see some action.
“I’ve had a chat to our committee about hosting our own competition and inviting some clubs to play some night games at Ocean Grove in a five or six-team competition,” Davey revealed.
“Whether that’s GFL, BFL, whoever’s interested … if there are sides from Melbourne who want to come down, they’d be welcome, too.
“But we just need to get at a point where people can come and watch and put some money over the bar to make it worthwhile.”

Davey welcomed news AFL Barwon will look to get junior football off the ground, which will include under-19s.
That’s a bonus for Ocean Grove, which had planned to unveil a bunch of talented youngsters at senior level this year who are still eligible for underage action.
“I just wanted to get games into those young kids, so at least they’ll still get to play,” Davey said.
