BARWON Heads has opted-out of AFL Barwon’s plans for a modified competition and is instead planning to organise its own series of games.
Co-coach Mitch Herbison said the reigning BFL premier is looking to play “three or four games” against both local and out-of-region opposition.
“When the season was cancelled, the football director (Brendan Curry), Troy (Mitchell, co-coach) and myself got together and put a few things in place to work out what would have been the rest of the football season would look for us,” Herbison said.
“We’ve got a few things in place to keep the guys training and keep the guys together, and we’re looking to play August-September if everything goes well (with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions).
“We want to get the community involved a little bit as well if we’re allowed to.
“AFL Barwon has got the ball rolling with a modified competition, but we’ve got some things in place to cater for Barwon Heads.”

Herbison said a majority of the Seagulls’ playing group was keen to have a kick.
“From there, the club has put a few things in place to make sure the guys have got the opportunity to play some games, all things going well with restrictions,” he said.
“Part of the reason we’ve done this path is that the Barwon Heads community love their footy, so we’re looking to play some games and give them something to come down and watch.
“They love getting down on the hill and watching the footy and having a few drinks and socialising.
“That aspect’s important for our football club.”

Herbison doesn’t expect to have access to former Hawthorn player Teia Miles for any matches they play.
A Barwon Heads junior, Miles was planning to play VFL with Geelong in 2020 and had the Seagulls as his interchange club.
With the Cats not part of the state league competition, which is due to start on August 1, Herbison expects Miles to find his way onto another VFL club’s list for the seven-round season.
“He is exploring his options a little bit at the moment,” Herbison said.
“Whether he goes to a club like Werribee or Williamstown, I think he’s thinking that through at the moment.
“So, it’s probably pretty unlikely he’ll be available in those games.”
Herbison also confirmed he and Mitchell are keen to lead the Barwon Heads into its delayed premiership defence in 2021.
“Once the season was cancelled, Troy and Brenan Curry and myself sat down and mapped out a little bit of a plan for this year and moving into pre-season (and) how it could all look,” Herbison said.
“But nothing’s official in terms of re-signing at this stage.
“Troy and I are both keen to continue, so we’ll continue to put the work in for the rest of this year and pre-season next year, and the club can make it a call on that when they’re ready.”
