MODEWARRE will be paying tribute to a club stalwart and premiership star during its Round 12 clash against Barwon Heads.
The Warriors are expecting a big turnout to honour Josh Finch as he runs out for game 300 at Mount Moriac Reserve on Saturday, he said he’s already receiving a lot of love.
“The club is certainly making it a very special lead-up.
“I’ve had a lot of texts, well wishes, and congratulations as well.
“The week’s gone quick.”
The four-time Les Ash medallist has been with the club since he was eight years old, eventually getting his senior debut in 2004 as a 17-year-old.
He’s also part of Geelong’s AFLW program as an Assistant Coach and spent time on the Cats VFL list as a top-up player.
“The thing I keep reflecting on this week in preparation for the 300th, I’ve achieved some personal accolades and team success as well, but for me, it’s just the people I’ve met through the club,” Finch said.
“It’s the culture and the people, everyone out there’s on the same page in terms of us all being equal, no one’s superior.
“We all get along, we’re all tight between juniors, seniors, and the senior football and netball.
“It just makes us a very special club.”
Finch said the goal of achieving success at the club he grew up with encouraged him to stick with Modewarre throughout his journey, despite being in high demand from rivals. across his career.
“I just felt like a wanted to win a senior premiership, especially at Modda.
“It actually got to the stage in 2014 where I actually thought my time was running out and it was probably not going to happen.”
Finch was at the time on Geelong’s VFL top-up list and admitted a move to South Barwon was on the cards to try and achieve an elusive premiership.
But he said he was thankful to have conversations with friends and teammates that convinced him to stay and achieve the ultimate success in 2018 with the Warriors.
Modewarre upset Barwon Heads by 56 points on Grand Final day, making up for a massive in the 2016 decider to Geelong Amateur.
“The first two-to-three minutes post-siren is one of the greatest moments of your life.
“You’re celebrating with all your teammates, family, friends.
“It was very special.”
