SAM Darley has stepped down as co-coach of Geelong Amateur; however, the club has wasted no time finding a replacement.

Ammos players were told of Darley’s decision at training earlier tonight (Wednesday, with former St Joseph’s star Riley Kershaw to partner Dan Holroyd in 2023.

The former Western Bulldog and GWS Giants AFL player and ex-North Shore mentor shared the role with Dan Holroyd in 2022, helping guide Ammos back to the finals after missing out on the top five in 2021.

President Simon Farrell confirmed Darley would continue as a player at KFC Oval despite a clearance being lodged to Western Region club Point Cook, which Ammos denied.

“We understand Sam’s decision to step down and we look forward to him continuing as a player,” Farrell said.

“We’re rapt Riley will step into the role alongside Dan.”

Kershaw, a three-time premiership player with Joeys, says he’s looking forward to the opportunity.

“It’s all come together pretty quickly,” he said.

“I’m good mates with Dan through social circles and footy – we’ve been in the same footy group for 10-years plus.

“Dan gave me a call last week and said there might be an opportunity there, and would I be willing to sit down and have a look at it?

“Over the last 24-48 hours, it’s moved pretty quickly.”

Kershaw retired after suffering a second ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in the Round 5 clash with Lara last year.

The 28-year-old says plenty of familiar faces at KFC Oval helped him in making the decision.

“And being a stone’s throw away from my house, it ticks most of the boxes,” he said.

“It’s an exciting prospect.”
