Falcons lock in pre-season lists

The next generation of Geelong Falcons is coming.

The Falcons have released their initial pre-season squads, with 35 girls and 50 boys, with three girls and 16 boys named to an initial train-on list.

While the club presentation night and AFL and AFLW draft periods are still on the horizon, Falcons talent lead Jesse Drever says there is no rest for the club.

“It comes around quickly,” he said.

“It wasn’t that long ago we finished the season. We’ve already made moves in terms of coaching and starting to look forward to 2025.”

Drever says the choice was made to bring the initial list down to a smaller list, keeping the doors open for players to start with their home clubs and earn their way into a spot.

“It’s very intentional,” he said.

“In past years, we may have looked at 80 to 100, but we’ve brought those numbers down.

“That allows us to keep the door open. We’ve seen some talent who have something to offer that can start the season off with their club and get themselves going.

“We had eight or nine last year who came down in that way, and we saw them involved in the program in different ways.”

The loaded talent list includes multiple possible father-son and father-daughter selections for both the Cats and other AFL clubs, as well as siblings of current AFL and AFLW players.

Pre-season will officially get underway mid-way through next month.

“There is so much going on,” Drever said.

“It’s really only a couple of weeks. And we also have a lot of our top agers and players who have nominated for the draft spending time with the coaches in coming weeks, so there is a lot on the footy front.”

Paul Corrigan will return for a fifth season as coach of the boys’ program, while Tash Heffernan has taken charge of the girls in the absence of Mel Hickey, who will be on maternity leave for the 2025 season.
