LUCKLESS South Barwon captain Darcy Hansen is unlikely to be seen until late in the 2021 season following surgery on a broken thumb.
Swans coach Dave Farrell confirmed Hansen suffered the break at training last month and has had three rods inserted in the thumb.
“It was really innocuous; he just fell in a contested drill, ” Farrell told K rock Football’s Coaches Catch-up.
“To be honest, it looked like a jar, a dislocated thumb, and it turned out it was a really serious break.
“They got him in (surgery) within three days, which was great.
“It was a tricky surgery, but he’s really positive about the outlook and the success he can have with it.”
It continues a horror injury run for Hansen since being appointed captain of South Barwon in 2018.
He made just six appearances that year due to a persistent ankle issue which resulted in surgery.
Hansen, the only player remaining from the Swans’ most recent premiership in 2013, was restricted to just six games in 2019 before undergoing an ankle reconstruction.
“To be honest, I think if you spoke to him, he wouldn’t dwell on that at all,” Farrell said.
“He’s always looking at the positives and (is) such an amazing influence to have around the club.
“For us, it puts things into perspective really quickly.”
