Grovedale will have at least one Kreuger pulling on the yellow and black on a regular basis in 2025 after unveiling its latest signing.
The Tigers have confirmed the arrival of Mathew Kreuger, older brother of former Geelong and Collingwood big man Nathan, who is expected to spend most of the year with the Cats’ VFL team.
Coach Jacob Spolding says Nathan helped Mathew land at Burdoo Reserve.
“It was Nathan that got the ball rolling,” Spolding said.
“He said: ‘Well, wherever I sign, I think my older brother’s going to make the move over to Victoria and live with us and he’ll play where I end up’.
“Since the week or so after Nathan committed to the footy club, we’ve just been in constant dialogue with him around what it might look like and when he’s going to move over.
“He confirmed with us on Tuesday night that he’ll be over at the end of March and he’s committed to the footy club, which is really exciting for us.”
The 185cm 27-year-old, who most recently played with Ironbark Cherry Gardens in South Australia’s Southern League, will provide extra experience in Grovedale’s developing midfield.
“We certainly understood that that was an area that we needed to strengthen to compete with the upper echelon of the competition in that area, so we feel like we’re doing that,” Spolding said.
“We’ve certainly got a lot of talented midfielders on our list, but we just needed to bat a bit deeper.
“So adding another one there will hopefully allow that to be the case.”
Grovedale will play practice matches against Point Cook Centrals, Werribee Districts, and GFNL rivals St Mary’s before opening its 2025 campaign with the John Nankervis Shield clash against South Barwon at Burdoo Reserve.
