Star midfielder Darcy Lang has stepped down as co-coach of GFNL club Colac.

After returning to Central Reserve, the former Geelong and Carlton player shared the role for the past two years with Rowan McSparron.

President Matt Gibson cited work commitments as the reason for Lang taking a step back.

“You won’t get a lot of change out of Darcy,” Gibson said.

“He’ll do his mentoring, and the amount he provides to the group won’t change – he just won’t have the co-coach tag.

Gibson said McSparron, who has been at Colac since 2019, will likely be solo in the role as he was in 2021.

“We’re always open to what’s around and what might pop up, and Rowan is as well,” he said.

“But, at this stage, we’re just looking at Rowan as the coach and putting some good support and assistants around him.”

GFNL: PREMIERSHIP STARS COMMIT TO POLDERS

Colac has posted consecutive 14-4 home-and-away seasons to finish second on the ladder in 2022 and 2023.

However, the Tigers have exited in straight sets in both years, with their four losses coming by an average of 47.75 points.

Gibson says the club will have a close look at their September stumbles.

“We’re doing a lot of things right, (but) we can’t seem to get it right at the business end of the year,” he said.

“We’re reviewing it pretty hard at the moment; all angles with the players and the coaches, and some external advice.

“A different set of eyes to ask some questions.

“We’ve got to keep changing and evolving, and look at what’s working and what’s not working and just try and get better each day.”

Gibson has confirmed the signing of the experienced Sam Giblett from Colac and District League club South Colac.

A Cobden junior with experience at senior level in the Hampden League and with Port Douglas and Simpson, Giblett has spent the past two years at the Elliminyt-based club.

“He’s super fit and a good ball user,” Gibson said. “He’s predominantly played off half-back at CDFL level.

“We think he’s got the attributes to step up and play GFL senior footy, no worries.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how he goes.”
