SOUTH Barwon key defender Jay Lever has become one of the GFL’s highest-profile players to throw his support behind AFL Barwon’s plans for a modified season.
It comes as the local governing body prepares to make an announcement in the coming days on whether the concept will go ahead.
Clubs were due to finalise their position yesterday, with the Swans making the late call to participate.
While Lever, who has taken on a development coaching role at McDonald Reserve for the 2021 season, doesn’t like the idea of not playing for more than 18 months, he has an ulterior motive for wanting to play.
“I’ve got my wedding in October, so I’ve got to try and get myself in a bit better shape for that, I reckon,” he said.
Lever said he was missing more than just running out at 2 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon.
“It is freezing Tuesday, Thursday nights here, and yet you get 30-40 blokes rocking up to training that just want to be here.
“It’s just mateship and a bit of camaraderie, I suppose; a bit of fun.
“When I was a younger guy, that’s why I played footy – just to have fun.
“I suppose it’s just going back to that.”
However, krockfootball.com.au understands any modified concept will involve less than 10 clubs from across the GFL, GDFL and BFL.
GFL clubs who have told AFL Barwon they won’t be involved include St Joseph’s, Grovedale, Colac, Lara and North Shore, while Torquay is the only BFL club keen to play.
It is believed no GDFL clubs will participate.
